(...back)
Chris opens up a little black satchel. You are both crouched in a locker room stall.
“What’s in there?” you ask innocently.
“What do you think?” retorts Chris.
“Space-vitamins?! No way!” you object.
Chris knew you would object. You are a good person. And you know that you could rationalize any crime, but that doesn’t make it right. But Chris counters that this is not like robbing a space-bank (Starbucks). This is a game. And the game has been fixed for a long time. The winner of the Big Race WILL BE on space-vitamins, so why shouldn’t it be you – the truly most qualified competitor.
This self-fulfilling prophecy makes sense to you. Plus this is your only way out of the Giant Ditch. But what if you get caught?
Chris reassures you saying, “Trust me, you can’t get caught. There are tests for some space-vitamins, but not these. Besides, what is the worst thing that can happen? You’ll just end up back in the Giant Ditch anyway. Wouldn’t you do anything to be a Champion?”
Boy, would you! But is it worth the risk? And is it worth it if you have to cheat? Maybe you should just be happy to work hard and enjoy your space-pizza.
